Summary of 'How to Win friends and Influence people' by Dale Carnegie

I recently finished reading a masterpiece by Dale Carnegie - 'How to Win friends and Influence people'. This 1936 self-help book has never been out of touch for the current reality since last 8 decades. Sale of more than 30 million copies speaks volume in itself, this masterpiece has secured its place in 'top 100 books of all time' in more than one occasions. Here I am going to summaries the major lessons which I came across while reading it. These points can act as ready reckoner for someone who doesn't have time to read the book in it entirety or for someone who faces dilemma while taking a decision:

1. Don't criticise, condemn or complain
2. Give honest and sincere appreciation
3. Arouse in the other person an eager want.
4. Become genuinely interested in other people.
5. Remember that a person's name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language.
6. 'Smile' most of the time.
7. Be a good listener, encourage others to talk about themselves.
8. Talk in term of the other person's interest.
9. Make the other person feel important and do it sincerely.
10. The only way to get best of an argument is to avoid it.
11. Show respect for other person's opinion. Never say, "You are wrong".
12. If you are wrong, admit it quickly and emphatically.
13. Let the other person do a great deal of talking.
14. Begin in a friendly way.
15. Get the other person saying 'yes yes' immediately.
16. Be sympathetic with the other person's ideas and desires.
17. Try honestly to see things from other person's point of view.
18. Let the other person feel that the idea is his or hers.
19. Appeal to the nobler motives.
20. Dramatise your ideas - it works in movies, theatre and office, literally everywhere.
21. Throw down a challenge.
22. Begin with the praise and honest appreciation.
23. Praise the slightest improvement and praise every improvement. Be 'hearty in your approbation and lavish in your praise'.
24. Call attention to people's mistake indirectly.
25. Talk about your own mistakes before criticising the other person.
26. Make the other person happy about doing the things you suggest.
27. Ask questions instead of giving direct orders.
28. Let the other person save face.
29. Use encouragement, make the fault seem easy to correct.
30. Give the other person a fine reputation to live up to.

Why every Indian 'reader' should write UPSC CSE at least once in lifetime?

Today I am going to illustrate the case why everyone in India who likes to read ( voracious or not-so-voracious) and is eligible to write, should made his/her hands dirty by writing the UPSC civil services exams at least once in his or her life time -

If you love to read, more often than not - you would have an inclination towards a specific genre. You might just be reading the crime fiction, or only the romantic novels. Or you may only be deep dwelling in the self-help books. Few people only read about the personal finance books while completely ignoring the macro economics. We often are too averse to switch to something that is new or something that we probably won't enjoy reading. For someone who is totally into mystery literature, geography could just be limited to earth, water and air. For those who only enjoy reading history literature, they might not know the importance of understanding economics or the personal finance for that matter. Someone who just enjoys thrillers, picking a book related to our environment could turn out into a sleeping dose. For someone who reads only horror or satire, putting the efforts to understand law of our land could be too mundane a task without realising that the basic knowledge of IPC or CrPC may save him life in many circumstances. For the ones who are personal finance buffs, they might not know that the understanding of UNFCCC and Paris Climate Change agreement can help them add their next diamond stock in their portfolio. For few of us, who prefer reading only about self-improvement books, we may not realise the importance that knowing the geopolitical happenings and the trends of right wing governments capturing powers in most of the larger economies, may assist us choose our next career or our next destination. For those who aspire to be good managers and good leaders and have been reading about Steve Jobs, Warren Buffets and Nelson Mandelas, they may not realise that knowing about Indus-valley civilisation, Chengiz khan, Napoleon Bonaparte, Lord Buddha and Chandra Gupta Morya may give them the unforgettable lessons about the leadership skills and also about the dos and don'ts for those aspiring to be future leaders. I can go on and on about the cons for many of us who are ‘not-so-diverse’ readers. One would never know the ecstasy and bliss which he or she might be missing by not venturing into new territories. If we do only one type of exercise everyday in our workout, we can never develop the full body shape that we aspire to build, reading only one genre of books is analogous to hitting only one body part in every gym session. Just like one body part exercise will never help you build the entire body muscles, reading only one form of books will never contribute in your overall mental development.

Now the question arises how one would expand the horizon of his reading habits. It is scarce that one would enjoy reading a subject until one is oblivious about the basics of that subject. It is an inveterate human nature to be in comfort zone with a nonchalant behaviour. Getting out of comfort zone is what is needed if one wants to see earth from sky rather than seeing sky from earth. Our views are most likely to be myopic if we cannot see life and the larger world from the eye-in-the-sky view.

To get the holistic understanding of the world, the easiest thing one can do is to fill the next UPSC civil services form and start reading basis the syllabus. It is most likely that you would not be able to read the genre of your liking while you are in the study mode for UPSC. But I can assure you that once you come out of the preparation mode, either selected or not selected, you would find that your reading horizon has expanded to the next level altogether. You would start enjoying all kind of reads without little discrimination. Only then you would see the world from the eye-in-the-sky and would realise what you were missing throughout your reading lifespan.

9 Letters with talisman

Recently finished the book : "The Secret letters from the monk who sold his ferrari "

Just putting the letters which jonathan got with each talisman on my webshere storage :

First letter : The power of authenticity

The most important gift we can give ourselves is the commitment to living our authentic life. To be true to ourselves, however
is not an easy task. We must break free of the seductions of society and live life on our own terms, under our own values
and aligned with our original dreams. We must tap our hidden selves; explore the deep seated, unseen hopes, desires, strength
and weakness the make us who we are. We have to understand where we have been and know where we are going. Every decision we
make, every step we take, must be informed by our commitment to living a life that is true and honest and authentic to
ourselves and ourselves alone. And as we proceed, we are certain to experience fortune well beyond our highest imagination.

Second letter: Embrace your fear

What holds us back in life is the invisible architecture of fear. It keeps us in our comfort zones, which are, in truth, the
least safe place in which to live. Indeed the greatest risk in life is taking no risk. But every time we do that which we fear
, we take back the power that fear has stolen from us - for on the other side of fear lives our strength. Every time we step
into the discomfort of growth and progress, we become more free. The more fears we walk through, the more power we reclaim.
In this way, we grow both fearless and powerful, and thus are able to live the lives of our dreams.

Third letter : Live with kindness

It is important to remember that just as our words are our thoughts verbalized, so our deeds are our beliefs actualized. No action, no matter how small, is insignificant - how we treat someone define how we treat everyone, including ourselves. If  we disrespect other, we disrespect ourselves. If we are cruel to other, we will be cruel to ourselves. If we can't appreciate those around us, we wont appreciate ourselves. With every person we engage, in everything we do, we must be kinder than expected,  more generous than anticipated, more positive than we thought possible. Every moment in front of another human being is an opportunity to express our highest values and to influence someone with our humanity. We can make the world better, one person
at a time.

Fourth letter : Make small daily progress

The way we do small things determines the way we do everything. If we execute our minor task well, we will also excel at our larger efforts. Mastery then becomes our way of being. But more than this - each tiny efforts builds on the next, so that brick by brick, magnificent things can be created, great confidence grows and uncommon dreams are realized. The truely wise recognize that small daily improvements always lead to exceptional results over time.

Fifth letter : To lead your best life, do your best work

There is no insignificant work in the world. All labor is a chance to express personal talents,  to create our art and to realize the genius we are built to be. We must work like picasso painted : with devotion, passion, energy and excellence. In this way, our productivity will not only become a source of inspiration to others, but it will have an impact - making a difference in the lives around us. One of the greatest secrets to a life beautifully lived is to do work that matters. And to ascend to such a state of mastery in it that people can't take ther eyes off you.

Sixth letter :  Choose your influences well

We do not move through our days alone or apart from the world around us. And we must always be aware of the things and the people we allow in our lives. It's a mark of wisdom to choose to spend time in those places that inspire and energize you. Whether in our work or within our personal lives, these most positive friends and peers will inspire us to be our greatest selves and to lead our largest lives.

Seventh letter :  Life's simplest pleasures are life's greatest joys

Most people dont discover whats most important in life untill they are too old to do anything about it. They spend many of their best years pursuing things that matter little in the end. While society invites us to fill our with material objects, the best part of us knows that the more basic pleasures are the ones that enriches and sustain us. No matter how easy or hard our conditions, we all have wealth of simple blessings around us - waiting to be continued. As we do our happiness grows. Our gratitude expands. And each day becomes a breathtaking gift.

Eighth letter :  The purpose of life is to love

How well you live comes to how much you love. The heart is wiser than the head. Honor it. Trust it follow it.

Ninth letter : Stand for something bigger than yourself

There are no extra people alive today. Every single one of us is here for a reason, a special purpose - a mission. Yes build a beautiful life for yourself  and those you love.  Yes be happy and have a lot of fun. And yes become successful, on your own terma rather than on those suggested to you by society.
But above all else - be significant. Make you life matter - be of use. And be of service to as many people as possible. This is how each of us can shift from realm of the ordinary into the heights of the extraordinary. And walk among the best who has ever lived.

Last post from IIT Bombay

So, the day has come when I am leaving the place where I lived two best year of my life. I am very sure, that it is very difficult to get the kind of life we had in IITB at any other place. We will cherish these two year throughout our life. To begin with, life was luking bit tedious when v entered in IIT in first semester. But later on things begin to moved according to us. We get molded according to IITB. This is a place where one does'nt need to worry anything but study.  This is the place which increase a person's value from 2-3 lack to 10+ lack in two year. This is the place which give one the confidence to take things heads on. People are no longer scared nd jitters from things which they used to, once they lived here. They taught us how to deal with deadlines. Thanks to the person who established these great institutes(Nehru of course). Thanks to HRD ministry for giving master student stipends, together with invaluable education and career. One can live his/her life with his/her full potential over here.

Have to thanks to lots of people here. Friends deserve the first slot (thanks IITB HCU for putting all mtech cse in same hostel in 1st yr. ). One can not forget IIT infrastructure without which nothing would have been possible. Thanks to my guide for leaving me on time . Thanks to our hostel mess for serving us cheap and quality(most of the times) food. Thanks to CSE dept. for having no thumb-sign system, nd v dont need to go daily to sign mustered. Thanks to CS101 course where i did my 2yr TAship nd never had to study new things. It was fun to be management TA of  CS101. Thanks to hostel 12 xerox shop for providing us cheap printouts and photocopies. Thx to our hostel general store due to which we never need to waked up early in the morning for breakfast. TUM-TUM's also deserve to huge thanks.  Thanks to IITB LAN for providing good internet speed. And life would have been tasteless if DC++ was'nt here. So a big big thanks to DC++. Hostel 12 TV room was one of the main entertaining spot in our life over here. Watching all cricket IPL and world cup matches on big screen with huge crowd is really unforgettable. And then many thanks to hall manager for allotting me lake side room.
All in all, I can say that whenever I will think about IITB in future I would just say - "vow, those were the days".

Missing IITB nd luking for corpo world:

Are we really on declining edge !!!

Is'nt it nice, that everyday at 5 AM we got a new Wiki-leak cable (India cable in fact) at The Hindu. Each cable brings lot of new and surprising piece of information. Every cable impose a new stigma on our government. But our nostalgic rulers are still slumbering. Each day a new scam is published, but our prime minister and finance minister try to defend the indefensible. Public wants answer either from PM or from the real empress. But no one is coming out and answering. The zero loss in 2G concept of Mr. Sibbal is already exposed, so not many people in the government now wants to give clarification. The government had already lost the credibility to rule since the recent revelation on Wikileak about the purchasing of MP's in 2008. But the voters like me are still in great dilemma. If at all I had to vote tomorrow, perhaps i will not be sure whom to vote. On one side I find the party which has given birth to endless corruption and other side I find the people which can even break the country on the basis of religion. For whom making a Temple had been the greatest priority for the wellness of our great nation (and still could not do this :P ). Since the elections are coming in three states, there can be an umpteen number of confused people like me. Say in case of Tamil Nadu, one side you have mongoose karunanidhi which have no scam outside his akin and opposition is also no good in the same area ie. corruption.

But the greatest enigma for me is - are these handful corrupt people enough for declining our nation. In spite of the fact that we still have large number of patriotic and dedicated pool of people, including Anna Hazare, Kiran bedi, Mr. Hegde, Baba Ramdev, Madani, Subramanian Swamy and many more. And they too are fighting against corruption. IAC(India against corruption http://indiaagainstcorruption.org/ ) is one of the movement which they all, together with millions of people, are driving throughout the country. Everyone amongst us can contribute his/her share for the wellness of our nation and thyself. So in spite of being in dilemma whom to vote and whom not to, let us try to bring the harsh LokPal Bill which has procedure to put the suspected corrupt person directly in Jail within 2 year of reporting. And all of the money he/she has looted will be recovered.

So I would like to conclude that these unfolding of the scams are not a sign of declining but corollarily for adieu of  scam prone people in India.

Snow white and shining sun

After arriving from school, he took his lunch and went to aunty's garden to revise his english questions with aunty's childrens. Today he was very relaxed and happy as today was the last day in school for classes. His exam will start from tomorrow with english as first exam. It was 2PM in the month of June. Sun was at his best to make people cry in its heat. He hardly had started mugging the most happening and expected essay "Importance of electricity for us". He noticed some of his colony friends going towards the nearby ground with cricket bat and plastic ball. He read the whole essay once in around 10 minute and quickly reached the cricket ground. Match had already started, so he got into the fielding team. Temperature was already touching 40 degree with hot wind as a bonus.

Match was in 12th over which was last over. He was not given any over to throw so far in the match. So he requested captain and got 12th over to throw. He was to bowl the last over. Batting team had already 70 runs. He was sweating all over due to heat and his cloths were throughly wet. He throw first bowl as wide. while going for another first ball, he heard somebody calling him loudly, but he just ignored it thinking some of his friend might be saying about his wide bowl. But in next second he realized that it was his father's voice. He looked back and pleaded his father to just wait till the end of this match. Then he requested to just finish this over but father pulled his hand, he could'nt speak anymore now. While leaving the ground he heard some voices saying "that's why we dont include him in our team".

Next morning he got ready for his exam, put his old eraser, new Natraj pencil and link pen in box. He reached exam hole at 8AM. It was english paper. The first question he encountered was -

1. Write summary of the chapter "Snow white and seven dwarfs" in detail, your answer should have at least 70 words.

He begin to think about this chapter. But the only thing he was able to remind at that time was - "snow white was a very beautiful girl with pink cheeks and each of the seven dwarfs took their chance to woo snow white but none of them could succeed".
He wrote all this detail in 2-3 lines and now what to write?. But the only thing he was confident about was-"Essay on cow". Now he start writing something like this --

"Each dwarf tried to impress Snow white but could't succeed. Then they decided that they will impress snow white all together. They collected all their money and bought a cow. They planned to gift this cow to Snow white on her next birthday.
That cow was having four leg.
That cow was having two ear.
That cow was having one tail.
That cow was having one nose.
.
.
.
.
(and so on).
Finally on the the lucky day they gifted that cow to Snow white. On seeing her gift Snow White said ".

(Time up called his teacher and took the answer book)

Deadline और वो

Software Configure

Programming in Pi calculus

Is it really interesting to write program in Pi-calculus ?
Is it easy and feasible to write program in Pi-calculus?

The answer of the above questions may vary for an individual. But yes i would say at least we can give it a try to write code in Pi calculus environment. Yes it is always difficult to write concurrent code. In case of Process calculus, programmer always have to keep thinking everything in term of process, weather it is function or object or anyother data structure. Pict and Nomadic pict are the language which are based on Pi-calculus and provide programming enviornment. Pict is not distributed programming language but NPict inherits the attribute of pict with distributed features, i.e. various component can be held at different machine and they can work collectively towards a common goal.
It is not anymore surprised that we can repersent most of the object-oriented features in Pi-calculus. Objects, class, function all are repersented in the form a process.

Democratic stone pelter

Title looks bit awkward, but yes in the biggest democracy we have the people who burn national flag openly, shout anti nation slogan and what not. Yes you guessed correctly the crown of india is burning these days. We are seeing new philistanian way of protesting. The situation in valley is different today from that of 1990's. Those time militant used to kill people but today police and paramilitry are compelled to shoot people for the saftey of their own life and government's properties. This is the first time since Independence that # of people killed by security forces in 1 year are higher then killed by militant. People have differnt view on various aspects. Sepratist leaders have pledges not to talk and they are mesmersing people. They call people for peacefull protest then make them excite to pelt stone, to burn governement properties
and the series is on and on. Security dont have non lethal equipment to scatter protester. As per one of my friends's view few of our Scientist should start making kind of chemical of instrument which dont kill people but at least stop them or disable them for 2-3 hr. to protest. These equipment will be very effective in our country, they can solve many of our problem not only in J&K but in rest of country as well.
Another solution told by one of my sarcastic and witty friend is, give them two days to go to pakistan or wherears and then ban protest and apply shoot on site rule for any kind of protest but this is ridicules is'nt it ?
One thing is clear that this approach of governement is Contaminating our democratic image but who cares. Sending more and more package dont seems to be a solution of this problem, we have other needfull people in our country for this money and who are very patriotic as well. And we tax-payer dont pay our tax to be wasted on anti national sepratist. yeh we are wasting a lot of money like CWG but not willing to remove Dharavis. Ok laeve that apart these all are different issues.
But at the moment what should governement do ?
Presdent Rule ............No, not a solution
More Army deployment ............of course not
removal of AFSPA.................No, it will dilute moral of army
Arrest of more sepratist leader........................may mork some what
Attachment of Abdullahs with people....................may work but not sure
making them autonoumus......................of course not
than what ? Do u have any clue ?
I would say ask C.M and his father to attach with arrest all sepratist leaders(This may make them leaderless), dont even allow peacefull protest. Ban all the mosque which make anouncement to call people for this so called Azadi(This may be heart attacking for our democratic leader).

Concurrency and Pi-calculus

Concurrency and Pi-Calculus

Lets start from lambda calculus as we all know lambda calculus is the base of functional programming many functional programming like - Haskell,Erlang are totally based on Lambda calculus(Where everything are in the form of function).
So what is the need of process calculus :
Seeing the modernisation of computer science, we want everything to be as much concurrent in our system as possible. Parallelism is the term which usually confused us with concurrency, the main difference is that in parallel programing we must have more then 1 resources and different process execute on different resource. But In concurrent system we can get feel of parallelism even from one resource. Actually only one process execute at a time but the processes executes in time slice manner.
Hence to describe the architecture of a softwares formally, we need some formal architectural description language. Many modelling language are used but the popular ones among those are - CSP,CCS, LOTOS and Pi calculus. Pi calculus is the one which i will be focussing here together with CCS.
Calculus of communicating System(CCS) given by R. MIlner views the system in the form of component and connection. Component, agent, process are the terms which often used interchangeably. CCS works very fine untill we have our system fixed but it does'nt work for mobile system where the connection between the agent may change dynamically, or new channels may be created according to need. Pi calculus is the one which works here for us. In Pi calculus we can transfer the name of one channel over other channel. For e.g.
(y) x(y,z).'z.P
This process accept two parameter on channel x(x is free name here namely), and store them on y and z, y is bound variable here which is used just to accept input in it and to forword via port z the output x and y.
Hence here we are transfering one channel name over other channel, this is the power of Pi calculus which gives it edges over all earlier descriptive language.
The tool for testing Pi calculus is MWB(Mobility workbench) which tests the two equallaence namely strong bisimulation and weak bisimulation.
This tool is analogous to the one CWB(Concurreny Work bench) used for CCS,CSP,LOTOS. But it not at all imitate things from MWB. But this tool is still under development. I guess we can't test properties here like we do in MWB using mu-calculus and CTL/GCTL.
So everything in pi-calculus has to be treated as a process even data also. The power of Pi-calculus enable it to repersents three of the building block concept of programming i.e. lambda calculus, Object oriented programming and imperative programming. We can show various data structues like lists using Pi calculus but the key thing is that everything here has to be as one process like class name, object in OOP and list and data in Data structure.
There are programming languages also which implements Pi calculus constructs. Pict is one of them.

Trying to be much regular

Well
so today whole of the days gone in the Room itself. Yes I had learnt few C++ and shell scripting stuffs which i was totaly forgetten(since many days back i had a look on them)
C++ how actually file pointer work. we need to create object of fstream class to seprately access the file and that file object handle all the file related accessing.cerr is a new object besides cin and cout which i came to know today. cerr is used to handle error reporting.
PATH setting is one of the important activities in linux OS. By setting the appropriate path we can make our script available system wise. And use our own script similar to the inbuild commands like- ls,cd,cp etc.
command: $ env
will give you many information related to our system environment together with path.
The first entries of each line here act as linux system variable and there values can be obtained seprately like for e.g.
$ echo $PATH
here we can see various path setted in our system seprated by : .
hence if we want to add our own path we can add it by
$ PATH = $PATH : \new directory path
for e.g.
$ PATH = $PATH : .
will set our path to current directory.
The above is the temporary way for adding path and will diminish as soon as we will close our terminal.
For permanat setting we need to make a change in the ~./.bashrc
in your home directory type
$ find | grep 'bash'
now you can open the ./.bashrc file and can add you path.
Attending lecture on F.V(formal Verification) was also quite interesting and thanks to Jeetu for waking me up so early(10 Am ah ah) in the morning and hope i will continue the same .
yeh the movie I watch today with Leela "Catch me if you can" is OK. Will not give negative review on this.Leonardo Decarpio had acted fabulous acted as against Tom Hanks.
Hope will write the very next day:

Begining Of one more semester

Yes of course, again a semester going to start in my life. I do'nt know when will this semester series going to end(perhaps two more). Anyway feeling nice to start my blog again after a long span of time. Yeh weather here is pretty nice as compared to my home town. Raining has started in mumbai, but there are no such sign of spring in North still. When I was at home, temprature was 46+ every day, so nice to be here in Bombay(sorry Mumbai) again.
In last two three months lots of events happens. But i am gonna write only about the recent ones. Lets start from the Bhopal Carbide factory gas leakage, Its 26 year now and victims are still struggling for justice. But yes our leaders and goverment thinks that the value of 20,000 people of this country is less then one American Anderson. Our Arjun Singh(Just opposite to the Kunti putra) the then CM of M.P is still silent and do'nt want to tell or perhaps he do'nt know why he allow the offener anderson to fly from bhopal in CM's official plane. And after that none of our goverment could succed to convince US goverment to extradite him. We are doing 200% just to get access of Headley(Who possibly was invoved in Mumbai massacre) in which 209 people were killed including 22 foreigner. And we have raise this issue on all possible highest level with international community(Because foreigner and rich indian were killed in this attack). But we do'nt take the issues like bhopal homicides serious enough. Means 22 foreigners are more important than 20,000 people killed in Bhopal => Our 1000 people are less valuable than 1 western citizens. Are we living in Such a country ...Oh GOD. And people of this country ask the reason of brain-drain.The answer lies in the above few line for sure. But still I would say ki "100 main se 99 baiman fir bhi mera desh mahan". Yeh here we have one reason to be happy that is ki at least our value is more than that of our tradition foe pakistan's people. This is enough reason for us to forgive our comparatively less corrupt leaders.
Anyway this is not gonna end here. Letz talk about some other things. Yeh I have to start from cricket that is more sueprior than religion and other issues like the Bhopal gas tragedy in our Nation. So our team has done excelent on zimbabwe tour. we loose two matches from Zimbabwe(not a shame for sure ) but we are still happy that we have defeated lanka anyway it was our B team(ohh really ). BCCI tried to copy Kangaroos policy here. But right now BCCI dont have time to look at team performance. All BCCI officers are busy somwhere else and the cause is Lalit Modi(Are all Modi so tough). One more hot new in cricket world now a days related to the next president of ICC (After Pawar) and the cadidate from Australia and NewZeland is Jon Howard former Aussies PM. Yeh and key of his selection I think is in the hand of Ejaz Butt(PCB Chairman) because three nation South africa,Sri-lanka, and Zimbabwe had already opposed his candidature while rest other nation excluding Pakistan have already assure to support him only Pakistan have not decided yet. That is why I am saying that key is in the hand of Butt Saab if he support Howard he will be ICC president else he will not .
The third hot topic(after politics and cricket) for every indian is of course Bollywood. Yeh they are doing good now a days besided a very few controversies(recently IIFA ceremony as some of big star did not attend it ). I have seen Rajneeti recently and was overwhelmed seeing it.
The three hot topic(Cricket,Politics and Bollywood) are not excluded from one anther as Rajneeti is union of Bollywood and Politics, cricket match b/w indian stars and Lanka team in post IIFA award ceremony is Union of Cricket and Bollywood while the persence of Sashi Throor in that match remind me the intersection of all three.
